Community Practices : Bidar (Chapter 1)
Community Practices and behaviour
This was a thesis project done in collaboration with Deccan Living Labs in Bidar. The goal was to work with the city and help curate/preserve their cultural significance along with bringing about innovative new ideas on the table for them to maybe adopt.
Bidar's rich quality of top soil caught my personal attention and hence their natural resources and topology were explored. Vinay from Deccan Living Labs was ever so gracous to take us around their natural treasures and the condition of the Jahaj ki Bawli baffled me.
Jahaj ki Bawli in Bidar
Based on the survey conducted with the residents and the religious institute around, a brief report was summarized with a few basic pointers that are leading towards this practice in order to ideate towards a behavioral change.
MAIN REASONS FOR THE
ABUSE OF THE BAWLI
PROPOSED IDEAS TOWARDS INCULCATING
A BEHAVIOURAL CHANGE
- Lack of ecological knowledge
- Indifferent attitude towards their surroundings
- Set habitual patterns for dumping their waste
- Lack of proper disposal methods for the waste
- Negligence on the part of communal responsibility
- Spread awareness in regards to the importance of maintaining an ecologically balanced environment with hands on experience
- Get children and ladies involved in the process for a behaviour change to slowly sprout out for the community
STAGE 2
In order to understand the cause of these behaviors in depth, the local teaching and religious institutes were paid a visit, keeping certain activities in mind to open up dialogues about the environment and to get them engaged and connected with the cause.
ACTIVITY DESIGNED FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN:
LOCATION :
Government Higher Primary School, Yadlapur
ENGAGEMENT :
TAKEAWAYS FROM THE ACTIVITY :
The students showed heightened interest in the DIY activities for upcycling plastic bottles.
In order to balance the rocks, students took it challengingly and confidently that helped starting up conversations about their natural surroundings, their role in it and some very interesting stories were exchanged.
ACTIVITY DESIGNED FOR THE LOCAL HOMEMAKERS:
In order to understand the practices and outlook the local householders had towards their waste management, my classmate and I visited a few houses around the region. Since the students had responded to the DIY activites very enthusiastically, we wished to do the same with the homemakers to stir up conversations about plastic recycling.
Discussing and brainstorming with the homemakers about the pros and cons of plastic recycling
Soon after, the ladies start coming up with their ideas
Bouncing off DIY ideas for recycling plastic bottle as it contributed towards their waste the most
A little something to connect with their shy children
The ladies and us, posing with our new made dripping pot systems for their plants
TAKEAWAYS FROM THE ACTIVITY :
Although the responses for these women and the other households were positive, we somewhere lacked in building a trustworthy bond with them which, I believe, gets built over time and actively being in touch. Due to the short time duration of our presence there in Bidar, we unfortunately couldn't stay connected for that long and technology did not prove to be a reliable friend in this situation either.
ACTIVITY DESIGNED FOR THE LOCAL COMMUNITY:
Since the locals around the bawli were not hedding attention to the garbage in the bawli, I wished to perform an artistic intervention in regards to waste management. The idea behind this activity was to 'beautify garbage'. For plastic bags were the most discarded in the bawli, plastic bags were used to make this small flower like installations.
It was heartwarming to see all these children come out of their houses and actively participate in this exercise which showcases their concern towards their community. agree with the issue at idea and come up with their own creative ideas to utilize these waste parts personally in their households.
